Hi Yingying. Thanks for your comment. Sorry to hear about your difficulty getting hired because of your visa status. I have several friends who have similar problems. Keep trying! There are some employers out there willing to sponsor you, particularly in the areas outside urban centers. Hopefully the Startup Act 3.0 will pass and change the way we value talent from other countries.

Nice posting, I agree with you. other than what you said, I think there may be many talented non-citizen designers out there, but companies are not able to either support them with working visa, or not willing to spend extra money on this or train them to be better.

Just a personal experience: I got an offer from a small design consultancy, but they were not able to transfer my H1B working permit, so they had to rescind the offer in the end.

Thanks for watching the presentation, I'm glad you enjoyed it. The next Balanced Team event is in Chicago, June 22-24. I'm not planning to speak, but there should be lots of other interesting talks, and it's a good group of people to meet. See this link for more information http://www.balancedteam.org/2012/03/03/balanced-team-chicago-2012/

This was an excellent presentation - wish I could have made it. I got to hear you speak once in Chicago and was equally impressed with how readily I could apply what I learned to my day to day work in software development.

As a side note..if you're not already aware, you should check out a tool called Trello. It makes those collaborative, agile list making sessions easy - alllmost as easy as paper & sticky notes.

I'm glad you found my post helpful! I firmly believe that knowing more about the technology and the logistics of implementation makes designers better able to anticipate users' needs and development challenges, just as you say. Having generalist teams of design-aware developers and development-aware designers leads to better products and better user experiences.

Great post Lane, here's a few more places and ways to look for designers.

http://www.authenticjobs.com/
http://jobs.37signals.com/

And if you want to throw the net wide (read: expensive) you'll get a lot of attention from designers (no guarantees it'll be the right ones though) by advertising on The Deck ad network which has nearly cornered the market on design related blogs.

http://decknetwork.net/

Finally, if you're looking for new entrants to the profession a good way to sort the wheat from the chaff is to offer a free workshop at a local university put on by your company. Those who show up are more passionate than those that don't and if you structure your workshop well you get to see what they're capable of well ahead of any interviews.

Simply awesome. Sometimes low-tech is the best tech.

A few weeks ago we tried to reach out to the owner of a piece of real estate we were interesting in looking into.

No one could get ahold of her. Went through our contacts, a real estate broker, online directories, Google, etc.

Finally we told our adviser Michele about the problem and she responded "Oh, just call 411."

Got it in 5 minutes.
